Traditionally, foam is the main component that is the interface between the human and mechanical factors in vehicles. Similarly, a tyre is the interface between the vehicle and the road. A seats ability to look after its occupant in a multitude of different ways is as important as a tyres ability to keep a vehicle on the road in a multitude of different conditions.

Foams have a little known characteristic, which is they “amplify” shock and energy. The more foam in a seat means the more amplification of shock which equates to a reduction in dynamic performance. This means that seat designers can put only so much foam in a seat for comfort whilst maintaining a seat that will offer satisfactory levels of dynamic protection.
